Net Zero Week is an opportunity to highlight the many ways the aviation industry is working towards net zero emissions by 2050. While much of the conversation focuses on sustainable aviation fuels and the next generation of aircraft, one of the most effective ways to reduce emissions is already happening today – by making better use of the skies above us.

Every unnecessary mile flown burns extra fuel. Every delay in the air, every holding pattern and every inefficient climb or descent adds to an aircraft’s carbon emissions. Across millions of flights each year, those small inefficiencies quickly add up.

That’s where airspace modernisation comes in.

As the UK’s air traffic management provider, NATS is redesigning UK airspace to help aircraft fly more direct, efficient routes. By combining new technology with a smarter airspace network, we’re helping airlines reduce fuel burn, lower emissions and minimise delays, while maintaining the highest standards of safety.

Why does UK airspace need modernising?

Much of the UK’s airspace was designed decades ago, when there were far fewer aircraft in the sky. Today, it’s one of the busiest and most complex airspace systems in the world, handling around a quarter of Europe’s air traffic despite having only around 11% of its airspace.

With flight numbers expected to exceed three million a year by 2030, the network needs to evolve.

Historically, aircraft navigated between ground-based radio beacons, often following indirect routes. Modern aircraft use highly accurate satellite navigation, allowing them to fly much more direct and precise paths.

Redesigning airspace to take advantage of this technology means aircraft can spend less time in the air, burn less fuel and, where possible, better manage noise for communities beneath flight paths. Find out more about airspace modernisation.

Every mile matters

The environmental benefits come from lots of small improvements that make a big difference over time.

More direct routes mean aircraft simply fly fewer miles. Smoother climbs after take-off and continuous descents towards landing reduce the amount of engine power needed during the most fuel-intensive phases of flight. Better traffic management also reduces the need for aircraft to enter holding patterns while waiting to land.

Airspace modernisation is expected to mitigate up to 4% of aviation emissions within UK airspace. These aren’t future ambitions – they’re benefits being delivered today.

The West Airspace Deployment introduced more efficient route structures across 54,000 square miles of the West of England, reducing the distance flown by around 150,000 nautical miles each year and saving approximately 12,000 tonnes of CO₂e annually.

In 2025, NATS also introduced Free Route Airspace across all Scottish airspace, allowing aircraft to plan the most efficient route between where they enter and leave controlled airspace. The change is expected to save around 18,000 tonnes of CO₂e every year.

Since 2007, NATS has cumulatively enabled around 17 million tonnes of CO₂e savings through operational improvements. We are committed to reducing a further 1 million tonnes of CO₂e per year by 2050.

Innovation beyond airspace

Airspace modernisation is just one part of the solution.

NATS is also developing digital tools that help aircraft operate more efficiently, including the Air Traffic Management Portal, which recommends more efficient flight plans to airlines in real time, and Intelligent Approach, which helps reduce emissions during the final stages of flight while supporting airport capacity. Reaching net zero aviation won’t rely on one breakthrough. It will take sustainable aviation fuels, new aircraft technologies, operational improvements and closer collaboration across the industry.

This Net Zero Week, it’s worth remembering that creating a more sustainable future for aviation isn’t just about the aircraft themselves. It’s also about building a smarter, more efficient airspace system that helps every flight use less fuel, produce fewer emissions and get passengers where they need to be more efficiently.

Because when millions of journeys take to the skies every year, every mile cut and every minute saved really does matter.
